Character and Culture: Chinese Character Workshop Draws International Students

On April 20,as China marked National Reading Week and approached World Book Day, the National Base for Language and Character Promotion at JXNU hosted a special lecture on Chinese characters, drawing more than 30 international students.

Themed around “Characters – Literature – Culture – Civilization,” the workshop was led by Li Fuyan from the Department of Literature. Dr. Li introduced the evolution of Chinese characters such as “” (electricity) and “” (waist) using oracle bone script and small seal script. Through group observations and interactive discussions, students explored the unique pictographic charm and cultural warmth of Chinese writing.During the reading session, Dr. Li shared classic Chinese poems and encouraged students to express their thoughts. Many international students spoke enthusiastically about their growing appreciation for Chinese culture.

A calligraphy experience followed, where Dr. Li demonstrated the seal-script writing of “多彩中文” (colorful Chinese). He guided students on brush grip, stroke movement, and character structure. The students practiced with deep concentration. “It’s as fun as painting, but every stroke carries meaning — it’s amazing!” one participant said.

The event offered a hands-on way for international students to connect with Chinese characters — through touch, writing, and personal experience. “Every horizontal and vertical stroke builds a bridge between cultures,” said a student. The workshop not only deepened their understanding of the written language but also planted seeds of curiosity for China and its people.
